Competitiveness and quality of Comorian products: a crucial debate for the country’s economic future
May 14, 2024The objective of this study is to determine the most effective methods for enhancing the resilience of Comorian poultry farms.
As part of the collaboration between the APILE project, which is supported by the European Union, and the PIDC project, which is financed by the World Bank, a follow-up mission was carried out by international poultry expert Bienvenue Beugré Tanoh, accompanied by national experts from the APILE project. The second mission, which occurred between April 16 and May 4, 2024, evaluated the advancements and the obstacles that persist in the Comorian poultry sector.
The team of experts conducted site visits to 35 poultry farms, distributed across three islands: Grande Comore (12 sites), Mohéli (9 sites), and Anjouan (14 sites). These visits facilitated the evaluation of the impact of previously implemented initiatives, with a particular focus on the enhancement of farm management practices. The farms demonstrated a substantial decrease in poultry diseases, a general enhancement in poultry health, and a considerable increase in productivity, resulting in augmented income for poultry farmers.
However, the findings of this mission demonstrate that infrastructure remains, in many cases, inadequate to meet the growing needs of the industry. Recurring challenges such as poultry feed, chick supply, waste management, and product marketing continue to impede the sector’s optimal development.
To ensure the sustainability of the implemented best practices, a monitoring and evaluation plan has been instituted. The plan encompasses sanitary surveillance, management of poultry housing, production performance, and ongoing training for farmers.
The provision of support will be sustained through the continuation of technical follow-up sessions, which are designed to further assist farms in their operations. Additionally, the facilitation of exchange networks between breeders will be undertaken to promote the dissemination of optimal practices. Furthermore, educational opportunities in business management and marketing will be made available to assist poultry farmers in more effectively marketing their products and achieving optimal profitability.
