June 13, 2024The APILE project and the Integrated Project for the Development of Value Chains and Competitiveness (PIDC) are working together to revitalize the Comorian poultry sector and promote the production and consumption of local poultry products.
This partnership is part of a drive to support Comorian poultry farmers and boost the quality and competitiveness of local products on the market.
In this context, Comorian poultry farmers have been offered enhanced support and regular monitoring by an international poultry expert, backed up by local quality experts, through training courses targeting hygiene and quality standards, and improved breeding and production practices.
Just a few months after the launch of these activities, the beneficiary poultry farms on the 3 islands have already seen significant improvements in their production methods and yields. They are now able to offer products that comply with internationally recognized good practices, providing Comorian consumers with fresh, safe and traceable products.
This development represents an important step towards greater food safety, while reinforcing the image of local products in the face of imports, whose conditions of transport, traceability and non-contamination are not always respected.
The national campaign launched by APILE and PIDC in June 2024, highlights the many advantages of consuming Comorian poultry products. Eggs and chickens from local farms meet a number of criteria that reassure consumers: quality, freshness, traceability and compliance with Islamic Halal standards.
The development of the Comorian poultry sector is also providing an economic boost, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas. The Msayidiyo wa Hamba cooperative in Mohéli, for example, brings together some fifteen women farmers, and is a perfect illustration of the positive impact this initiative is having on job creation and improving living conditions for local communities. Promoting poultry farming as an engine for local development is part of an overall strategy to boost the national economy, by strengthening value chains while improving the living and working conditions of small-scale farmers.
